The Workshop
Infection control and prevention has been a critical consideration in the design and construction of the healthcare-built environment for decades and given what we have experienced throughout the Covid pandemic, it remains a top priority. Implementing some of the latest best practices in the physical healthcare environment can help to minimize their impact—and help to produce the best outcomes for patients, families and staff.
This intensive and interactive workshop will explore new and evolving approaches to infection control through new design innovations, clinical methods, technologies, and protocols. Attendees will participate in an interactive forum lead by industry experts including infection preventionists, environmental services leaders, facility managers, industry partners, and design specialists and will explore the importance of integrating the available options to continually improve outcomes and mitigate the risk of infection.

Shari L. Solomon, Esq. is president of CleanHealth Environmental, LLC. CleanHealth provides infection prevention, industrial hygiene and OSHA training and consulting services geared toward facility personnel and vendors responsible for infection prevention, cleaning and disinfection, and facility operations and maintenance practices. Ms. Solomon possesses more than 20 years of environmental consulting and federal regulatory experience. An attorney by trade, combined with her experience in the industrial hygiene field with a focus on infection prevention, Shari holds a unique expertise and understanding of liability prevention techniques, offering clients practical and valuable risk management solutions.
Prior to launching CleanHealth, Shari held the position as Director of Training with a full service industrial hygiene firm and was charged with the development and oversight of all training programs nationwide. Ms. Solomon’s has trained thousands of individuals, both here and abroad, spanning 19 years. Shari also conducts infection prevention services including policy and procedure program development, infection prevention evaluations, litigation support, and environmental quality assessments.
Ms. Solomon is a Designated Trainer under the Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technician Program (T-CHEST) from The Association for the Healthcare Environment (AHE) of the American Hospital Association as well as a member of Durable Coated Fabrics Task Force, affiliated with the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID). Shari is a Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) through the ACAC and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida and a Juris Doctorate from The Catholic University of America.
Barbara Dellinger is Director of Design and Research at Adventist HealthCare (AHC) a multi-hospital system, located in Maryland, and expanding into DC. In her position she oversees interior design to include planning, finishes, furniture, art, signage and lighting, using evidence-based design (EBD) research and best practices as the guiding tool. Shady Grove Medical Center, part of the AHC system, is currently planning a new Tower, to open in 2024, which will include a new ER, ICU, CVIR and new private rooms. Barbara is leading the evidence-based design aspects related to the patient experience in the new patient rooms, using tools from the CHD to conduct studies on existing buildings. Besides Acute Care, her experience includes Behavioral Health and Rehabilitation projects. Prior to joining AHC, she spent 10 years at HDR in Alexandria, VA as Director of Healthcare Design, East Coast. She currently co-chairs the Center’s EDAC Advisory Board, is a founding member of AAHID where she is on the Board of Directors and assists with leadership in the Durable Coated Fabrics Task Group.
Andrea is the proud daughter of a dedicated 50-year ICU / CCU Cardiac Nurse & a 30-Year Army Colonel and pre-Kaizan “Gilbrethian” trained era process improvement driven Industrial Engineer for the US military complex who both greatly influenced her to devote her entire facility design & planning career on the safety, functional and operational improvement of Healthcare and Science Facilities. Andrea despises waste!
After working within and being well mentored by the top healthcare Mid-Atlantic region A/E/C Firms - She successfully started her own Healthcare design firm (Hyde Incorporated) at the age of 33, which over 16 years she grew to gain national and then international in the Middle East Region recognition.
She was past Chairman of the Maryland Chapter of American Society of Interior Designers – sitting on National Healthcare facility committees and roles for the organization,
She selected to be the first Interior Designer on the FGI Guidelines - Healthcare Guidelines Revision Committee (FGI-HGRC) where she founded the Surfaces & Furnishings Sub-Committee writing standards of performance for Healthcare Surfaces and Furnishings currently found in in all current editions of the FGI.
She led the Maryland State Certified Interior Design Legislative Coalition – regularly presenting on key built environment improvement bills to MD legislative bodies & committees
Her many clients and employers include US and foreign Government Agencies and top ten Healthcare and University Organizations planning and design billions of dollars of SF of award-winning research, outpatient, inpatient & Senior living environments over her long career.
She has spent the last 12 years while working within the planning design and construction departments of three top rated level health provider organizations incepting and facilitating extensive in-depth technical research, testing & development toward the creation of a fully Per-fabricated multi-manufacturer contributed Integrated Modular System Concept for Med/Science Tenant Improvement Fit-out. Her life’s work goal is to use this proven innovation work to change and substantially improve the outcome paradigms for Health and Science interiors tenant interior fit out forever!
Teri Lura Bennett is the AAHID President elect and Test Development Committee Chair. She is currently working in partnership with professional organizations, manufacturers, associations and advocacy groups to actively improve the quality of design in the built healthcare environment. Recently as senior interior designer in Johns Hopkins Health System, Facilities Architecture + Planning, Teri worked closely with internal facilities and clinical staff, project management teams, architectural consultants, on design and construction projects. Her role included upholding Hopkins brand identity by thoughtful selection and specification of finishes and furnishings, maintaining comprehensive standard databases for products that could thrive in the rigorous healthcare environment, engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration with proven ability to multitask with understanding of interpersonal, political and archival factors. She had multiple opportunities to conduct real-world field tests to maximize performance-based selections of finish materials and furnishings. Concurrently Teri worked as a registered nurse in intensive care and leadership positions, which proved invaluable in collaborating with our clinical staff to improve the Hopkins clinical environment.
Sandy Goodman is a Certified Healthcare Interior Designer with nearly 35 years of healthcare design experience. Sandy is the President of CRGA Design, an architecture and interior design firm that specializes in healthcare design. She is currently serving as President-Elect for the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID). Sandy has also been recognized for her strong leadership skills as a 2019 Baldrige Executive Fellow. Throughout her career, Sandy has focused on designing caring environments from a human-centric perspective. She strives to support the delivery of care through the design of environments that facilitate the flow of efficient processes in a patient-centered environment that will foster positive outcomes. Her passion for designing healthy built environments is supported by her training in evidence-based design, and she continues to engage in opportunities to broaden the body of knowledge and resources available to healthcare interior designers.
Project Architect at SmithGroup, Annie Chiang is a vital design team member of the Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center Ocean View Tower and subsequent renovations to their existing hospital. Her experience has ranged from early programming and planning to delivery and construction administration for various scales of healthcare facilities in Southern California.
As an accomplished hospital and nursing executive for over 25 years, Christine Basiliere has led multiple patient care departments at Sharp HealthCare, one of the most prestigious integrated healthcare systems in California earning the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. By closely aligning nursing practice to innovation and the aims of quality, access, and costs underpinning Sharp HealthCare’s mission, she consistently elevates the voice and value of nursing and the care delivery team. Christine was recognized as a “Distinguished Woman of the Year by Assembly woman Lorena Gonzales of the 80th district of California for leadership in her profession. Christine’s background includes extensive work in clinical informatics, medication safety, advancing the evidence-based practice agenda, and redesigning operational processes to transform the healthcare experience for patients and providers.
