The Military Health System (MHS) includes over 300 Medical Centers, Hospitals and Clinics located worldwide on Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps installations. In 2011, the MHS began transforming its over 440 primary care practices within MTFs into the PCMH model of care and adopted NCQA PCMH standards to establish consistent Tri-Service operating principles, which the Uniformed Services used to develop MTF operating guidance. As a result, the MHS has been able to standardize business and clinical operational workflow, appointing/scheduling templates, staffing models, performance measures, goals and a capitated revised financing model.  

This session will review information from the HCAHPS and Press Ganey Surveys to understand how reliably patient expectations related to room cleanliness are being met. These data help to identify the types of hospitals and patients that are most at risk for poor cleanliness reports. The webinar examines ways in which these perceptions are related to other organizational outcomes, including “positive word of mouth” and hospital-acquired infection scores. The session ends with a review of design considerations to facilitate room cleaning and improving patient perceptions of cleanliness. 

Much of illumination design and science are concerned with the delivery of optimal lighting conditions to the human eye. There are many more effects than those involving vision, sleep, and circadian rhythms. This presentation will use an "inside-out" approach to consideration of effects of light, by taking a look at how the human nervous system works, and how light is involved in non-visual responses. 

A Safety Risk Assessment (SRA) is required as part of the 2014 FGI Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities. To support this, The Center for Health Design has been developing a toolkit to provide a systematic way of addressing the underlying conditions that may cause risk for adverse events in healthcare. This offers teams a way to proactively engage in safety-based discussions early in the process with opportunities for check-ins throughout the project lifecycle. 

Is it possible to decrease patient fall injury severity using a flooring material? Playground surfaces are required to have a force reduction factor to reduce the number and severity of head injuries among children. This is not true yet for healthcare flooring. This presentation describes the role flooring material has on patient and resident falls and fall injury, and identifies current and future research study needs.

CHD 2014 Changemaker Award Winner Avein Saaty-Tafoya, CEO of Adelante Healthcare, outlines the vision, planning, construction, and implementation phases of the 43,000 sq. ft. comprehensive health center that is Adelante Healthcare Mesa. By engaging staff, patients, board members, the CHD Pebble design community and research partners at CHD and AZ State University, Adelante has demonstrated that EBD is not only possible but an asset when the not-for-profit and ambulatory sectors of the system are developing Capital projects.
