The Workshop
The challenges created by today’s growing mental health crisis, especially in light of the pandemic, reach far beyond the behavioral health unit into a myriad of care settings. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that these settings respond to complexities of care, are flexible to respond to fluid care needs, and offer equity to patients.
To support improved care and enhance staff safety, today’s is design, facility and care professionals have to advance their understanding of the environment’s impact on behavioral health care and learn how to incorporate the best and latest design solutions throughout all healthcare settings.
This virtual workshop provides the latest in design thinking for behavioral health care and settings and offers state-of-the-art best practices through thought leader presentations, case studies, and panel discussions. Attendees will have opportunities to pose questions to workshop faculty and interact with fellow attendees in fun and innovative ways.

Experts
Ellen brings over 30 years of experience in architecture, research, and business to leading The Center’s research team. She is a registered architect and member of the American Institute of Architects who was recognized by Healthcare Design as the HCD10 Researcher in 2017, an award recognizing significant contributions to the industry.
Ellen has been responsible for conducting built environment design research, as well as large-scale program management, and extensive cross-departmental coordination. Ellen has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning, Global Executive MBA degrees from Columbia University and London Business School, and a PhD in design, patient safety and human factors from Loughborough University in England. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Steering Committee for the FGI Health Guidelines Revisions Committee, the Board of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH), and the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Health Environments Research & Design (HERD) Journal and American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC).
Marguerite Pedley has served in a leadership position at Penn Medicine Princeton Health since joining the organization in 2008 and is now Senior Vice President of Princeton House Behavioral Health. In this role, she is the executive leader for both inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services. Dr. Pedley directly oversees a 116 bed behavioral health inpatient campus. Her responsibilities include personnel management, fiscal accountability, performance improvement, regulatory compliance, service excellence, and the oversight of both clinical and non-clinical departments. In addition, she maintains executive responsibility for Princeton House’s acute outpatient sites located in North Brunswick, Hamilton, Moorestown, Eatontown and Princeton.
Dr. Pedley has extensive experience in acute care behavioral health including oversight of a state designated psychiatric screening service, psychiatric inpatient services, and inpatient medical detoxification units. She has secured several grants to support patient care initiatives, including the most recent award of $250,000 from the New Jersey Department of Health’s Integrated Health Services Division to reduce barriers and increase access to care for First Responders in need of acute behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment. Earlier in her career she directed a cross-cultural counseling center for refugees and immigrants, which also provided training to regional health professionals.
Dr. Pedley is a graduate of the University of Scranton and a former Fulbright Fellow. She earned her masters and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton. She has been an active member of the Behavioral Health Constituency Group of the New Jersey Hospital Association and the National Association for Behavioral Healthcare (NABH) since 2009, serving on NABH’s Steering Committee on Behavioral Health Services within General Healthcare Systems since 2015.
Kirk is a Professor Emeritus at Texas A&M University where he has taught healthcare design at the graduate level since 2004. His academic research is about the relationship of evidence-based health facility design to measurable organizational performance. His five-year professional Bachelor of Architecture is from the University of Texas in Austin. His Master’s Degree in Organization Development is from Pepperdine University, and he completed a PhD in Nursing & Healthcare Innovation at Arizona State University, studying nurse movement patterns and interaction with objects in the ICU patient room.
A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, he is board certified by the American College of Healthcare Architects with 30 years of active practice prior to joining Texas A&M. He is only the second architect advanced to Fellowship in the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He is a founding principal emeritus of Houston’s WHR Architects (now EYP Health) with healthcare projects in 20 states and eight other countries. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from ACHA and the ChangeMaker Award from the Center for Health Design.
A frequent author and presenter, he is a founding co-editor of the peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary Health Environments Research & Design Journal (HERD) now in its 12th year. His most recent books include 2017’s Area Calculation Method for Health Care with co-editor Sarel Lavy; Rigor & Research-Informed Design: A Decade’s Advocacy in 2013; Design for Critical Care: An Evidence-Based Approach with co-author Mardelle Shepley in 2010; and Evidence-Based Design for Multiple Building Types with co-author David Watkins in 2009. “Design of Operating Theatres for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery,” authored with Bill Rostenberg in 2015, appears in Alston, Myles & Ranucci’s, Cardiac Anaesthesia from Oxford University Press.
Stefan is an architect/partner at White Arkitekter, where he has worked on a variety of projects in the healthcare space, with a special interest in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. His efforts are heavily focused on the concept of “healing architecture,” looking at ways that the environment can impact the health and well-being of patients, families, and staff. Lundin is a PhD student at the Center for Healthcare Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology.
Francis Murdock Pitts is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading planners and designers of psychiatric facilities and as a leader in the development of an evidence-based design practice culture in North America
He has consulted on more than 300 projects involving well over 20,000 mental health beds in clinical settings located in in all parts of the United States and Canada. He has served as National Vice President of the American Institute of Architects and as President of both the AIA’s Academy of Architecture for Health and the American College of Healthcare Architects. In his leadership positions in these institutions he has advocated the development of practice cultures that evince evidence-based design. He speaks widely and publishes articles on the lessons that can be learned from exemplary hospitals and the application of research evidence to hospital design.
In recognition of his contributions to healthcare design and in particular for his work for the mentally ill, Frank was honored by The Center for Health Design with their 2018 Changemaker Award.
Dr. Abushousheh is an Organizational and Environmental Gerontologist and Researcher Associate for The Center for Health Design. With combined expertise in architecture, organizational development, gerontology and applied research, Addie advances comprehensive and translational agendas related to quality assessment and performance improvement for aging and dementia in the continuum of care. In addition to publishing and presenting, Addie is a tri-chair of the Facility Guidelines Institute’s residential document group, maintains an adjunct faculty appointment at Kent State University, is a member of the Moving Forward Coalition, is a Board Member for IDEAS Institute, and serves as an Advisor to Abacus Institute and The AIA’s Design for Aging Knowledge Community.
As a part of The Center's research team, Melissa focuses her efforts on grant-funded research initiatives, as well as supporting ongoing work of The Center, such as the Affiliate+ program, the Knowledge Repository, and the Evidence Based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC) program. She examines the impact of the built environment on health through the development of conceptual models that link design and outcomes and by evaluating the effects of evidence-based design innovations and by disseminating research findings through tools, presentations, and publications.
Melissa was previously a senior design researcher for Davis Partnership Architects and prior to that she served as a researcher with the OMNI Institute and the Center for Children, Youth & Environments at the University of Colorado. With a background in both architecture and social science, Melissa describes her research style as “boots on the ground with a knack for rigor.”
Melissa graduated from Cornell University with a Masters of Science, Applied Research in Environmental Psychology and received her Bachelors of Environmental Design, Emphasis in Architecture from University of Colorado, Boulder.
Mardelle is a professor in the Department of Human Centered Design, a member of the graduate faculty in the Department of Architecture and the executive director of the Institute for Healthy Futures at Cornell University. A fellow in the AIA and ACHA, she has LEED AP, WELL AP and EDAC credentials. Dr. Shepley has authored/co-authored six books, the most recent of which is Design for Mental and Behavioral Health. She has worked full and part-time in professional practice for 25 years.
Avein Saaty-Tafoya, the 2014 Changemaker Award recipient, is an inspirational leader with 32 years of healthcare experience providing leadership and advocating for healthcare equity in primary care, hospitals, health plans, public and community health. As an artist and humanitarian, her mission is to improve the health of the underserved through patient experience and by addressing the social determinants of health.
While President & CEO of Adelante Healthcare for over 13 years, a Federally Qualified Community Health Center in the Greater Phoenix area, she completed several Pebble ambulatory projects including the first LEED Platinum community health center in the nation in Mesa, AZ in 2012. She became EDAC certified and co-chaired the Center for Health Design's Research Coalition and now serves on the Center's Board of Directors. With her consultancy, she is actively working with health systems to advance the impact of evidence-based design and the patient experience across the country.
Ed is a graduate of the Ohio State University and architect at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Over the past 15 years, he has helped facilitate the physical growth of NCH from a regional hub to one of the largest pediatric medical campuses in the nation. Ed managed the 2012 Backfill project which renovated more than 362,000 square feet of the hospital’s main campus. He is proud to have established a successful construction program which provides a “housing vaccine” as part of the hospital’s population health initiatives. He led the design and construction of the Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion and continues to advocate for children facing mental health challenges. Ed enjoys being an amateur celloist and woodworker. He also serves as chairman of his local Keep America Beautiful affiliate.
Access to adequate medical and mental healthcare resources is one of the most pressing challenges facing the world. Shary has committed her career to helping organizations expand their services, as well as develop new strategies and innovations that improve treatment for those in need of this complex medical and mental healthcare.
With more than 35 years of experience in healthcare design and leading integrated teams, Shary excels in getting laser-focused on a problem and defining the best possible solutions. As a leader in the industry, Shary has shared her expertise and insights in media outlets, as well as global and domestic conferences.
As a senior healthcare architect in the Office of Construction and Facilities Management, Mr. Madani leads the design team for all existing and new “geriatrics” and “mental health” facilities in the VA. A member of the Facilities standards group he has created the national VA design guides for Community Living Centers, Outpatient and Inpatient Mental Health and, has represented VA on the US Access Board. These standards ensure efficient and effective use of resources aimed at increasing the quality of care for the most vulnerable patients- our aging veterans. Prior to his position at the VA, Mr. Madani was at the Department of Health and Human Services overseeing Primary Care Construction grants to the underserved regions of the country. Mr. Madani Has a MS in Aerospace Engineering from University of Maryland and Ph.D. in Healthcare Architecture from Texas A&M University.
