Healing through the Eyes of a Child

What will a child find interesting and inviting?  What will calm a young patient facing surgery?  What will bring comfort to another child recovering from illness?  Administrators at Banner Health challenged themselves to look through the eyes of a child to answer these and similar questions as they designed Cardon Children's Medical Center, the centerpiece of a $356 million expansion project on the Banner Desert Medical Center campus in Mesa, AZ.

Opened November 2009, the dedicated children's healthcare facility encourages family interaction in a unique setting that trades hallways for roadways and rooms for homes in neighborhoods children can move into and enjoy during their hospital stay.  In addition to  house numbers on mailboxes, colorful icons waterjet cut into floors help children identify their homes.

The hospital specified nora rubber flooring for these floors and those that run throughout most of the 464,000 square foot facility, citing ease of maintenance, improved indoor air quality, comfort underfoot and good acoustical properties as reasons to change the original specifications from VCT to rubber.  In addition, noraplan environcare and norment serra offer palettes that support an emotionally refreshing design that welcomes children and comforts them during their stay.
