Key Concepts/Context
Nephrology nurses’ impressions of their work environments (professional/social, not physical) are related to nurse and patient outcomes, for example, nurses’ employment decisions.
Objectives
The purpose of this study was to learn more about the link between the professional and social environments that nephrology nurses encounter and patient and nurse outcomes/decisions.
Methods
A total of 199 registered nurses who worked for a single national dialysis company at 56 different dialysis facilities answered survey questions. Data collected were statistically analyzed.
Findings
Nurses’ perceptions of the social and professional environments in which they work are correlated with their decisions to stay on a job and patient hospitalizations.
Limitations
- All participants worked for a single firm.
- Surveys were distributed at work, so nurses may have felt concerned about providing information that could be construed negatively.
- All findings reported are based on correlations.
