Key Concepts/Context

This article discusses the use of non-pharmacological interventions as part of an effort to minimize the negative effects of antipsychotic drug use on patients with cognitive impairment or perceived behavioral issues. Aspects of the built environment were included.

Objectives

To review nonpharmacological interventions that could be used when working with patients with cognitive impairment and behavioral and psychological symptoms associated with dementia, to help meet the goals of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) initiative, National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care.

Methods

Literature review; however, it is not noted if a systematic approach was used for this review.

Design Implications
Aspects of the built environment discussed as barriers in this article included a lack of quiet space (activities are sometimes bothersome to other residents) and the room’s temperature or atmosphere (e.g., too hot, too cold, too small, noisy).
Findings

This article represents a series of papers to be published that discuss how to meet the goals of the CMS initiative and better integrate non-pharmacological interventions into nursing home and similar environments. For this summary only the aspects of the built environment were included; for other nursing care processes, please see the article.

Limitations

The authors do not reference how they conducted their literature review, therefore it is unclear that the literature had been exhaustively and systematically searched.
