Key Concepts/Context

A tool is needed to assess the content and quality of information in briefing documents.  One is not currently available.

Objectives

To develop a tool to assess the content and quality of information in briefing documents.  A well-developed brief is important because “The brief is essential for capturing users’ needs and guides the whole building process from planning to construction.”

Methods

Items for the tool were generated, reviewed by expert panels, and then the instrument tested for reliability via assessments of inter-rater reliability and stability.

Design Implications
Use the instrument developed to assess briefs!
Findings

An effective, valid, and reliable instrument, the Content and Quality in Briefs Instrument was developed.

Limitations

Experts assessed content validity; more sophisticated assessments can be made as data are collected using this and similar instruments to be developed in the future. The test sample of briefs was small.
