May 2021 Webinar

This webinar highlights the University of Michigan Medical Center’s journey to address this challenge. In 2012, their hospital and ED leadership hypothesized that creating a dedicated unit in the ED for the provision of extended critical care would help meet some of these challenges, which in turn may improve care delivery and patient outcomes. Pre-determined guiding principles were carefully followed throughout the design and build phases. From start to finish, the project utilized key lean facilities design principles including the use of full-scale mock-ups. This led to a finished build that was completed ahead of schedule, under budget and with no significant change orders.

The first program in this series addressed healthcare finance basic rudiments, and subsequent sessions will focus on measuring efficiencies and their financial impacts, and lastly, continuing the diligence through project delivery.

This first of a four-part series is designed to close that knowledge gap and empower architects and designers to develop a basic fluency in healthcare finance, and in subsequent sessions discover direct applications.  We also recognize that most in the design community are not wired to think like a CFO, so this session will not be recitation of algebraic formulae, but how they are practically applied through group interaction and active problem-solving.
