Noise remains one of the top complaints by patients and the cause can come from many different sources. Current design standards influence background noise levels including HVAC systems, walls that separate rooms, sound isolating performance of doors, vibration levels, and intrusive noise from the outside. While these design items are important in mitigating noise, staff behavior, knowledge, and willingness to address the issue also play an equally critical role.
