SEPTEMBER 2024

Resilient Aging

This week’s first in-person meeting of our new Resilient Aging Environments Network, or RAEN, was everything we imagined it could be.

Members were open, dedicated, kind, and deeply passionate about solving problems and improving people's lives as they age. And the unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to new and experimental models of care – provided by our hosts, RAEN member CEO Steve Lindsey and his team at Garden Spot Village – was as inspiring as it was educational.

For example, to provide diverse living experiences that meet the needs of diverse populations, Garden Spot has developed some unique models. Their small “pocket neighborhoods” of single-family homes are creatively integrated community spaces for independent living.

They are also experimenting with a five-bedroom home for low-income seniors to share, while having access to all of the Garden Spot support programs. One of the more unique parts of the meeting was being welcomed into these residents’ homes to hear about their experiences first-hand.

Realizing that many couples don’t want to separate when one spouse needs to move into a dementia care unit, Garden Spot piloted a highly successful design that attached securable one-bedroom apartments to dementia care units. This allowed spouses to continue to live together while providing a higher level of support and care.

We also experienced a fascinating new integration of sonic technology and memory care, developed by Composure and the subject of a recent study by The Center’s research team, that is proving effective in improving sleep quality and behavior.

The RAEN network is just one opportunity available through The Center to expand your knowledge of tools and strategies supporting our aging population. You can learn more about RAEN – as well as our acute care, pediatric and behavioral health networks – here on our website.

Our website also houses an abundance of resources: our Impact of Aging Toolbox – with open access provided by Patcraft – includes dozens of briefs, best practices, tools and webinars. There are Interactive Design Diagrams for Healthcare at Home, Aging in Place, and Universal Design. Our Knowledge Repository contains hundreds of aging-related research articles, links and summaries.

There is so much more – discover what’s there!

Be Well,

Operating in a region of the U.S. where exceedingly high real estate costs constrain hospital expansion, Stanford Medicine Children’s Health began evaluating sensor technology in 2019 as an innovative tool that could enable them to optimize space utilization and increase capacity within the confines of existing building footprints.

Attend to hear a case study presented by three strategic space planning experts from Stanford Medicine Children’s Hospital, where they will provide an in-depth and behind-the-scenes examination of how sensor technology has changed the way space is analyzed, used, and assigned at Stanford.

2025 Changemaker Nominations Open

Who do you know that is making a difference in the way healthcare facilities are designed and built?

Our industry is filled with professionals who have committed themselves and their careers to innovate, advocate, lead, mentor and drive genuine change, but might be working in relative obscurity, on small projects with smaller budgets, or in underserved communities whose projects don’t garner big awards.

Can you help us find members of our healthcare design community who have brought those same qualities to bear on our profession?

Enhancing Behavioral Healthcare with Thoughtful Design

Behavioral healthcare is increasingly acknowledged as an essential aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains significantly underfunded and underdeveloped in the healthcare system. One in five adults in the United States experiences a mental health or substance use disorder severe enough to require clinical attention, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The Unique Challenges of Children’s Hospitals

Authored by members of The Center’s Pediatric Environment Network.
Experienced planners know that children’s health design projects differ from adult projects, but the specific requirements that must be considered are not always intuitive. These differences have become more important as pediatric beds shift from general hospitals to specialized children’s hospitals.

Designing Flexible Healthcare for the 50-year Solution

The need to have individual offices for each doctor or each practitioner has diminished; it’s now more important to have flex and shared spaces and touch-down type spaces, which benefit not only the patients, so they’re not moved around as much, but it also benefits the staff because they’re not taking as many steps in a day. Thinking about efficiency and how that flow works is a big change from the traditional model of how they used to practice.

U.S. Healthcare BuildingTrends and Innovations for 2024-2025

As new medicines, treatment regimens, and clinical protocols radically alter the medical world, facilities and building environments in which they take form are similarly evolving rapidly. Innovations and trends related to products, materials, assemblies, and building systems for the U.S. healthcare building sector have opened new avenues for better care delivery.
