Meet Me in Atlanta
Dear Friends of The Center,
2024 has been a year of exciting change for The Center as we launched new strategic initiatives to enhance engagement between the healthcare design and healthcare provider communities – and we’re barely halfway through it!
Most exciting and rewarding has been our new role as a Strategic Educational Collaborator with the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE), and the transition of our conference affiliation and educational healthcare design programming to the PDC Summit, where we have joined ten other industry-leading non-profit associations as a Supporting Organization.
Our first PDC Summit this past March in San Diego was everything we hoped for and more. We debuted our new Research, Design & Outcomes learning track with 12 exceptional sessions by our research staff, environment networks, and healthcare design's foremost thinkers. And we re-connected with old friends and made new ones at our wine and cheese social, at our booth, and throughout the four-day event.
I can’t believe we’re already deep into planning for the 2025 Summit in Atlanta – these PDC folks know how to plan and get ahead of the game!
Speaking of which, we’ve just unveiled our expanded 24-session track for the 2025 Summit, plus our pre-conference workshop on Integrating Lean and EBD. We’re presenting a tremendous variety of course offerings on topics related to Design Research, Design for Patient Experience and Outcomes, Technology and Design, Behavioral Health Design, Pediatric Design, Design for Staff Wellness, and The Business of Design. Check them all out here.
One of the things our friends told us they really liked about the Summit was the value – four-day, full-conference registration is just $1,150. And Affiliate members at any level pay the discounted ASHE member price – just $925 saving you an additional $225. Summit registration is open, and the full PDC Summit agenda will be available here any day now.
We’ll let you know as soon as the full agenda is up on the PDC website. In the meantime, save these dates – March 9 to 12, 2025 – and make plans to join us in Atlanta!
Be Well,
Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

Pediatric Perspectives in Health Care Design
|
Yolanda Keys, R.N., NEA-BC, EDAC, Research Associate, The Center for Health Design
Children with disabilities spend considerable time in health care spaces, but there is little research examining their experiences. Three recent articles share different ways researchers collected children’s input and include recommendations for future design. Payam and colleagues used arts-based methods and interviews to collect data from young patients with disabilities, developmental delays, behavioral problems and/or chronic health conditions. Kids drew pictures of different locations within a clinic and then described their artwork.

Addressing the Hidden Challenges to Rural Maternal Mental Health
|
Since the early 2000s, a growing number of maternal care centers across the country have closed their doors – most of them in rural areas, creating dangerous care deserts. Maternal health care is already scarce in these areas as 45% of rural counties had no hospital maternity services before an additional 9% lost services between 2004 and 2014. While the lack of maternal care resources can gravely impact the physical health of a birthing person, it can also limit the amount and quality of maternal mental and behavioral health care.

Sinks, Drains and the Need for Infection Control
|
When it comes to restroom cleaning protocols, the focus is invariably on the cleanliness and appearance of restroom fixtures, floors, walls, counters and mirrors. But environmental services workers should know there are two especially critical areas that are often overlooked in the maintenance of a safe, clean restroom — sinks and drains.

Growing Importance of Cultural Representation in Senior Living
|
Expressing the culture of residents who are moving away from the homes where they’ve spent much of their lives has always been an important consideration, but there's a recent shift from mainly faith-based cultural considerations to broader notions of cultural affinity. Architects are often asked to design master plans and buildings that will enhance the culture and history of the places where they’re located. It requires sensitive engagement, especially as we commit more and more to diversity, equity, and inclusion—both on our design teams and for the people we serve.
