A word from the Research Team . . .

As the newest co-editor for the HERD Journal, I am heartened by the breadth of topics being submitted to the journal (and the sheer number of literature reviews being published)!

In May alone, you’ll see a few HERD publications in press including papers about restorative hospitals (Heikkilä, et al.), agent-based modeling for wayfinding (Khasraghi and Nejat), a participatory design framework for rural communities (Johnson and Hellem), corridor visibility and care team communication (Zook, et al.), hospital-based kitchen gardens (Carroll, et al.), and three literature reviews - the role of the environment in supporting engagement of older adults (Gripko and Joseph), research and design of rehab environments (Pasha and Shepley), and research gaps for inpatient healthcare settings (Elf, et al.).

As I’ve done quite a bit of work on wayfinding in the past, the topic always interests me. Khasraghi and Nejat’s publication is the 10th wayfinding study entered into the Knowledge Repository in the last year. Also check out the Jiang, et al. slidecast about using greenspace in wayfinding!

It’s an exciting time of development for our field, and as we head into summer vacations, take some research reading to the beach, on your cruise, or anywhere you’re heading for relaxation!

FEATURED
Key Point Summary

Implementation of a navigation system: Economic verification in a local hospital.

Have you ever wondered about the economics of a digital wayfinding system?

Majerova and colleagues evaluated the cost-benefit of a proposed mobile wayfinding system.

The authors found that after factoring the initial cost of development against annual cost avoidance for direction-giving, maintenance, and equipment, the benefit-cost ratio was 5.27 and the payback period was just under a year.
