MARCH 2024

Our Bags Are Packed

We know the routine well. It’s been 36 years since we created our first conference, The National Symposium on Healthcare Interior Design (any of you out there remember that one?), so as they say, this ain’t our first rodeo.

But this week, as we put the finishing touches on our plans and programs for our inaugural presence as Strategic Educational Collaborator for next week’s PDC Summit, there’s a sense of excitement and anticipation among the staff as we take this big step forward in our journey.

(For those of you who might have missed the news, we’ve parted ways with the Healthcare Design conference that we helped launch in 2003, partnering now with ASHE as a Strategic Educational Collaborator for the PDC Summit as part of our strategy to expand and enhance engagement between the healthcare design and provider communities. Read the announcement here.)

We’re excited to get our healthcare design research, tools, resources, strategies and successes in front of a bigger and broader healthcare audience. To share with them the improvements in health, safety, satisfaction and business outcomes that can be achieved using an evidence-based design process. And to create stronger connections between our healthcare design community and the folks most responsible for planning, financing, building, managing – and approving – the environments we create.

Our PDC educational program this year includes a pre-conference workshop on Fundamentals of Evidence-Based Design. And we are debuting a new Learning Topic and 12-session educational track – Research, Design and Outcomes. In 2025 the track will increase to 24 sessions. Check out what we’re doing here.

Before we lock it up and head out, I want to take a moment to extend our deepest thanks to the ASHE organization and the PDC team. As we scrambled to plan and create our program in a few short months, they have been enthusiastic, supportive and accommodating partners at every turn – and best of all, they already “get us”! We’re confident and optimistic that this will prove to be a successful endeavor!

If you’re in the Southern California area, there’s still time to register for PDC in San Diego, March 17-20. We’d love to see you!

Be Well,

Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

Vacant retail spaces provide a unique opportunity for healthcare systems to increase care services within their communities.

With the mission of providing an integrated care system for all, Friend Health’s new primary care center on Chicago’s South Side was uniquely positioned to serve a population that has historically been under-represented and under-served in healthcare solutions.

By detailing the collaborative efforts of the health system, developer, and designers, this webinar will describe the team’s approach to adaptive reuse, repurposing vacant retail space to provide direct health benefits for the patients, families and staff who access the facility and live within the neighborhood.

Slidecast: The Perception and Attitude Toward Noise and Music in the Operation Room: A Systematic Review

Noise in the operating room can be stressful to the surgical staff and affect their performance. It may not significantly impact laparoscopic tasks, but it does affect clinical reasoning, especially in less experienced residents.

Communication is vital in the OR, and noise can disrupt it, causing distractions, particularly for surgeons. This study highlights the importance of addressing noise in the operating room, and how it can impact both patient outcomes and the well-being of the surgical team.

Exploring Family-friendly Design Trends

Yolanda Keys, R.N., NEA-BC, EDAC, Research Associate, The Center for Health Design
Families are an important part of the health care journey for many patients, yet ensuring hospital spaces support a variety of family activities (beyond the family-zoned patient room) is a potentially overlooked component of design. While waiting spaces and family zones are important, there are other considerations that might support family involvement in reducing stress, maintaining relationships and improving participation.

Top 10 Trends in Senior Living Facilities for 2024

The 65-and-over population is growing faster than any other age group. Architects, engineers, and contractors are coming up with creative senior housing solutions to better serve this burgeoning cohort. Senior living facilities can no longer simply be places where Americans go after retirement to live in isolation. These facilities must be places where seniors not only can socialize with each other but also can interact with their surrounding communities.

3 Changes for Hospitals to See Greater ROI from AI

The hype surrounding AI might have you believe the technology is rapidly transforming the healthcare industry for the better. But in reality, most health systems aren’t seeing a huge ROI from their AI investments yet. Performance Flooring: Safety, Ergonomics and Acoustics

Whatever the purpose of the space, a floor’s performance requires adherence to established standards or technical guidelines. In most spaces, however, the floor is taken for granted as a passive surface, not a performing one. A performance floor can be defined as a surface that responds to users in a way that supports and enhances their activities. The way the floor functions can improve performance when relying on three key benefits working together: safety, ergonomics, and acoustics.
