Experiences of Sensory Overload and Communication Barriers by Autistic Adults in Health Care Settings


A 2022 study by Strömberg and colleagues identifies problematic patterns of sensory and communication experiences for autistic adults. Findings suggest that unpredictable environmental stressors and inability to exercise control over the immediate environment can impede communication between autistic participants and caregivers. Design recommendations to support this vulnerable population are included.
