OCTOBER 2023

See You Soon!

Our bags are (almost) packed and ready to go as the Center team gets ready to head off to another Healthcare Design Conference.

New Orleans is an emblematic location for this gathering, renowned for its rich history, vibrant sense of community, diversity and resilience.

Like New Orleans, we are a diverse, vibrant, and resilient community. And while its history may reach a little deeper than ours, The Center is proud to be celebrating our 30-year anniversary.

As an industry, and as an organization, we’ve had our challenges, but we’ve always risen above them. We’ve stayed focused on our collective mission of improving safety, health outcomes, and the healthcare experience for patients, families and staff throughout the healthcare industry.

We’ve come together throughout the years, in gatherings large and small, in person and online, to learn and share as a community and to raise the level of expectations in every facet of our work.

We’re looking forward to seeing many of you again. And yes, there will be M&Ms!

Stop by our main booth near the third floor educational sessions or in the Expo Hall. Say hello and share your stories with our team, and check out our latest research, resources, tools and upcoming events. Enter our drawing for a one-year, all-access pass to Center resources, webinars and events – a $4000 value. And be sure to pick up a copy of our newly-updated Resource Guide.

Not attending HCD this year? We’ll miss you but we have a Virtual Show Bag here for you, too.

As you start planning your conference schedule, don’t miss the Center’s many events:

  • Our Evidence-Based Design Pre-Conference Coaching Workshop;
  • Our ever-popular, by-invitation-only VIP Reception for Center Affiliates and Partners;
  • Our annual Awards Ceremony and Changemaker Keynote featuring this year’s honoree Barbara Huelat; and,
  • Our own research team sharing their discoveries and insights in several conference presentations.

Check them all out here.

Thank you for your support over our 30 years as we’ve grown this community and celebrated our successes together. I hope to see you in New Orleans!

Be well,

Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

PRODUCT INNOVATION HIGHLIGHT

ACCURATE LOCK AND HARDWARE
LR-SW Ligature Resistant Swinging Door System

The patented Ligature Resistant Swinging Door System is designed to be a heavy-duty, cost effective solution that provides improved safety and privacy in patient bathrooms.

By further reducing opportunities for inpatient self-harm, the LR-SW contributes to the highest priority of caregivers, a safer environment, and less stress for caregivers, patients and families. Patients can no longer easily hide behind a full door, utilize the door as a weapon, or slam/damage the door. The saloon-door design prevents removal of parts that can cause harm to patients or staff, and improves visibility to allow staff to respond more efficiently to patient needs.

New Hybrid Model Brings Premium Benefit to Healthcare Projects

When the word “hybrid” is mentioned, healthcare projects and strategies that involve emergency or operating rooms come to mind. While such facility strategies have dramatically improved the operation of hospitals and healthcare facilities by providing flexibility and efficiencies, the process for bringing these spaces to life has evolved less so. Although owners are offered options that range from traditional Design-Build to Design-Bid-Build, Construction Manager at Risk and Integrated Project Delivery, each bring with them pros and cons that challenge the benefits to owners, designers, engineers and contractors.

Facilities that Anticipate Future Challenges

The health care field has experienced unprecedented change and upheaval over the past few years. Increasingly, resiliency is referenced as a way for systems to adjust to changes and disturbances, but what does that really mean? Health care facilities must be designed in such a way as to respond to challenges related to everything from disease outbreaks to climate change to artificial intelligence. These changing times have ignited interest in concepts of flexibility, adaptability and “future-proofing,” in both health care operations and design.
