A Long Life Well Lived
Dear Colleague,
As we head off to Charlotte tomorrow for this year’s Environments for Aging Conference & Expo, I’m thinking about not only the professional learnings in store, but the personal ones as well.
It’s impossible to spend three days immersed in the care and housing challenges faced by our exploding aging population, and not think about the lives of your aging parents, family, or your own future.
At the same time, you can’t help but be amazed and uplifted by the passion and innovation of our industry to create environments and products designed to enhance the health, safety, wellbeing, longevity, and yes, the happiness of aging adults.
If you’re not able to make it to EFA this year, you can still take in many of the latest advances in design for aging available in The Center’s extensive online offerings of research, tools and resources, including:

The Center mourns the passing of friend and colleague Wilbur (Tib) Tussler, Jr., FAIA, FACHA. Tib was an early proponent of using credible research to inform design decisions, a stalwart leader, and a mentor and friend to many. We will miss his voice in our industry.

EBD Journal Club: Built Environment Design Interventions at the Exits of Secured Dementia Care Units: A Review of the Empirical Literature
Built environment design is recognized as important in the care and management of responsive behaviors for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in secured care units.
The repetitious behavior of “walking with purpose” (previously termed wandering) in those with dementia has influenced safety-related design components to decrease exiting attempts. However, empirical literature addressing design interventions to prevent exiting is lacking and outdated.
