Our Hidden Heroes
Who do you know that is making a difference in the way healthcare facilities are designed and built?
We ask that question every year and it has produced a healthcare design “Who’s Who” of deserving and inspiring Changemaker honorees.
Ray Pentecost. George Tingwald. Maggie Calkins. Pattie Moore. Cyndi McCullough. David Allison. Robert Mayer. Frank Pitts. Mardelle Shepley. The list goes on and on for nearly 25 years, all the way back to our first Changemaker, Robin Orr, in 1999.
Most of these names are instantly recognizable for their accomplished careers and well-known achievements.
This year, as we open the 2023 Changemaker nominations, I’d like to challenge our community to think a little broader, deeper and outside the box.
Our industry is filled with professionals who have committed themselves and their careers to innovate, advocate, lead, mentor and drive genuine change, but might be working in relative obscurity, on small projects with smaller budgets, or in underserved communities whose projects don’t garner big awards.
Over the last couple of years we’ve seen what exceptional sacrifice, effort, commitment, ingenuity and caring looks like in our healthcare workers and the impact they have made. Can you help us find members of our healthcare design community who have brought those same qualities to bear on our profession?

Because autistic adults have an elevated risk of many health problems compared with the general population, stressful and inefficient health care experiences have the potential to further negatively impact the health and well-being of those with autism.
To overcome the trepidation experienced by those providing and accessing healthcare, there is a need to understand and overcome specific challenges regarding sensory experiences and communicative barriers. The goal of this study was to identify problematic patterns of sensory and communication experiences for autistic adults.

Health Equity and the Push to Value-Based Care
|
|
Social, economic, and geographic disadvantages create significant disparities in healthcare, such as lower quality of care and lesser health outcomes. To help improve these issues, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) redesigned the Global and Professional Direct Contracting Model under the new name, the Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (or ACO REACH) Model. This new model will test ways to address health inequities by focusing on alternative payment structures that could better support accountable care delivery and care coordination.

Interior Design with Caregivers in Mind

Hospitals and other healthcare facilities increasingly are focusing on establishing spaces for caregivers that offer comfort, privacy and an opportunity to rest and recharge before heading back to attend to patients. These spaces – alternatively referred to as respite spaces, recharge rooms and opportunity to achieve staff inspiration and strength (OASIS) rooms – need to be more than just spare rooms where caregivers close the door to get away for a few minutes. Rather, they should be comfortable spaces where workers can actually relax, catch up socially with their peers and eat comfortably.
