Happy Together
Who knew that the theme for our annual VIP Reception at this week’s HCD Conference in San Antonio would also be such an appropriate description for this year’s entire conference experience.
From the kickoff keynote to the very last educational session, the atmosphere was electric, energy level off the charts, and everywhere there were smiles proving that we were truly “happy together”. Increased attendance and a packed expo hall were further evidence of this year’s success.
For The Center, conference is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the amazing work done by our industry to further our shared pursuit of improving healthcare environments, culminating in our annual awards ceremony.
This year, a record 19 projects and products completed the rigorous application process to earn Touchstone status for their exemplary use of an evidence-based design process. This is no beauty contest – Touchstone recognition represents the pinnacle of achievement in evidence-based design. Take a moment to learn more about the 2022 Touchstone recipients here.
Seven projects were recognized with Healthcare Environment Awards for their innovative, life enhancing design that contributes to the quality of health and care. I always find the winners in the Student Design Work categories to be creative, inspiring, and reassuring – to know that there are brilliant up and coming designers out there. Finally, we honored Ray Pentecost with our 2023 Changemaker award for the global impact he has had in changing how the architecture profession, healthcare providers and academia think about design – from a focus on healthcare to a focus on design for health. Ray’s story and contributions are amazing – read them here.
The hardest part of this year’s conference was saying goodbye! See you in 2023!

Interactive Design Diagram: Behavioral and Mental Health In-patient Room
Healthcare is provided in a variety of settings, from a person's home to outpatient clinics, to the hospital. While the settings and specific design elements may differ across the continuum of care, the objectives of safety, efficiency, satisfaction, and high quality care remain constant.
The interactive design diagrams provide a link between the evidence base, design strategies, and desired outcomes - in a visually intuitive and actionable format.
Our most recent diagram addition is the Behavioral and Mental Health In-patient Room. The design of in-patient rooms for behavioral and mental health has focused on safety for both patients and staff through checklists for ligature-resistance. While safety is always a driver, we shouldn’t lose a strong emphasis on healing for this specialized care. Healing and safety design strategies are drawn from behavioral health-focused design interventions to inform an in-patient room that can improve outcomes for all.

Following the completion of a comprehensive campus master plan, SmithGroup was engaged to plan and implement a transformative healthcare facility for Emory University and the School of Medicine.

Spending on Mental Health Substantially Increased from 2013 to 2020
|
|
Mental health challenges have become more prevalent in recent years: the percentage of people under the age of 65 with employment-based health coverage diagnosed with a mental health disorder increased to 18.5% in 2020, compared to 14.2% in 2013. Not surprisingly, employees are also using mental health services more than they did in the past. The percentage of enrollees using outpatient services rose from 12% in 2013 to 16% in 2020.

Tackling Infection in Senior Living Communities

After the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing effects from variants and virus spikes, increased concerns from seniors and their families have risen about safety, leading to a decline in new resident occupancy in senior living communities across the country. Seniors are among the most vulnerable populations, and even a mild infection can have detrimental effects. Up to 3 million serious infections occur in long-term care environments each year, contributing to 380,000 deaths, according to the CDC.
