DECEMBER 2021

We Are Grateful

Everyone has a favorite time of the year and mine is between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. The cities look beautiful dressed in decorations, people are in a happier mood, business slows down at The Center and we close shop for longer than usual to spend time with friends and families.

As we ushered in 2021, I think most of us were more than happy to see 2020 in our rear-view mirror. It was a year of challenges, sadness and uncertainty. Though 2021 still had its hurdles to overcome, with the availability of a vaccine and successful protocols for COVID, there have been glimmers of a new normalcy.

As we close out 2021, it’s a good time to reflect on what we have accomplished. To mention a few, we -

  • Had more than 12,000 people from around the world attend one of our virtual workshops, webinars or social events.
  • Celebrated the 3,000th person successfully passing the EDAC exam and becoming certified.
  • Added over 400 research citations to the Knowledge Repository
  • Dramatically expanded our international reach.
  • Launched the new Functional Program tool.
  • Created content on topics of value to our community, focusing on behavioral health, aging, pediatrics and modular building.
  • Came together as a community at the Environments for Aging and Healthcare Design Conferences and Expos.
  • Celebrated achievements through the Touchstone, Changemaker, Lifetime Achievement, Healthcare Environment and Nightingale Awards.

We did all of this with your support and for that, we add you to the list of things we are grateful for.

As we move into the holidays, I wish for you and your loved ones continued good health, happiness, contentment and peace of mind.

Stay well,

Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

CONGRATULATIONS

Voices of the Industry

Our August Voices of the Industry discussion featured four compelling voices from leading architecture firms, where they shared their radically re-thought visions for healthcare delivery and healthcare spaces at the intersection of where people live, work and learn.

If you weren’t able to attend August’s panel, you can listen in on this fascinating, revealing and future-looking discussion free of charge and on demand here on The Center’s website.

Then make sure and mark your calendars for our next Voices roundtable on January 27, 2022, featuring 2021’s Changemaker and Lifetime Achievement Award winners – Dr. George Tingwald of Stanford Health Care and Frank Zilm of the University of Kansas – and hosted by Barry Rabner, The Center’s board member and past President and CEO of Penn Medicine Princeton Health.

Four Trends Shaping Future of Healthcare Design

The healthcare industry has undergone immeasurable challenges and changes throughout the last two years. Driven by the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic, the continued retailization of healthcare, and new research into delivering better outcomes, hospitals and healthcare systems are finding new ways to adapt to emerging pressures and best serve their patients, including updating the built environment. Trends Driving Leaders to Embrace Prefab and Modular Construction

Healthcare leaders today are seeking construction solutions that are flexible and durable, on pace with technological change, save time and money, and substantially reduce or remove the need for downtime. What’s behind this shift to prefab and modular construction solutions in the healthcare sector? These three trends are shaping healthcare leaders’ decision making.

The Design-Build Model Delivers Unique Solutions for Healthcare Projects

Many projects move in a linear fashion from the initial planning phases, through the design and on to the actual construction and completion. Having the expertise of both design and construction housed under one team allows project groups to communicate throughout the process, getting involved at any stage with little need for reorientation as new members and perspectives come onboard.

Open Layouts, Emerging Tech Among Trends Entering Healthcare Facilities

It has been a challenging 20 months for the healthcare industry, and burnout among employees is on the rise. With longer hours and more patients than ever, it is harder for healthcare staff to maintain everything on their plates. With traditional hospital layouts, areas such as break rooms, staff lockers and elevators are not easily accessible and take healthcare teams farther from their patients in the event of a medical emergency.
