SEPTEMBER 2021
Autumn Musings
How quickly time flies! With autumn kicking off in just a few days, it’s hard to believe that HCD Expo & Conference is just around the corner.
If you are in the midst of getting registered for the conference, happening October 23-26 in Cleveland, I wanted to let you know there are ten sessions that feature The Center's expert staff, including a pre-conference workshop on Saturday, October 23 titled, "W01 Coaching Workshop: Practical Application of Evidence-Based Design”. You can get more information on this and the other Center sessions here.
I look forward to every aspect of this conference from the tours and sessions to the social events and keynote presentations, but especially so this year after missing a year of meeting in-person. The Center will again have a booth on the main floor near registration. Please make sure to stop by to say hello.
One of the conference highlights for me is The Center's VIP reception. This is a chance for The Center to show appreciation for all our Affiliate members and volunteers who represent the very best about our industry. This year's VIP reception will be on the evening of October 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and will be extra special as we will be celebrating with an auction filled with iconic items.
Not yet an Affiliate member? If you or your organization is not yet a member, I encourage you to contact Lynn Kenney, our Director of Industry Relations, to learn about membership options and decide which is best for you. Our Affiliate members enjoy discounts on most Center products and educational tools and will receive an invitation to join us in Cleveland at our VIP reception.
Be well,
Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

Slidecast: Magnitude Matters: Art Image Size and Waiting Time Impact Perceived Quality of Care
Long wait times can have a negative impact on our healthcare experience and how we perceive the quality of care. Previous studies have looked at how the content of art may provide a positive distraction during a long wait. However, up until this 2020 study, no one has taken an empirical look at the effect of the size of the art on healthcare outcomes. Researchers used an online photo survey to investigate the effect of art size in an exam room. Results show that when it comes to art, size matters.

COVID-19 has forced healthcare systems to adopt new technology and processes to deal with changing problems. The pandemic has placed stress on the healthcare sector’s workplace, infrastructure and supply chain. Health IT adoption and implementation has significantly increased since the beginning of the pandemic as health systems were forced to depend on digital health technologies for care. Planning for Smart Hospitals
|
Smart hospitals are built upon the foundation of an energy-efficient, code-compliant and resiliently designed infrastructure by connecting technology to support people through better processes. They don’t just happen, they are designed. Technology is embedded in devices now more than ever, and a smart approach gets the right data to the right entity at the right time for better patient outcomes, a safer environment and to meet carbon goals.
