AUGUST 2020
Inspired by Possibilities
Our lives have changed dramatically over the last few months, and this change can feel overwhelming at times. We know, as designers, how important resiliency is to incorporate into our healthcare facility designs, but how can we create resiliency in ourselves? And, where can we go to refuel and find inspiration?
With more time at home than usual, I have enjoyed going through photos from my travels over the years and sharing them online, encouraging family and friends to do the same. We may not be traveling right now, but to see the places we've been to is very enjoyable and a great starting point for fun conversations. I've found that your circle of friends and the community you are a part of can provide inspiration daily. Inspiration can also come from connecting with and actively participating with a cause or in an organization that is making a positive difference in the world.
The Center is ready to help you find purpose, stay focused and discover inspiration. We have many upcoming events filled with innovators from both within and outside of our industry, where you will have a chance to actively engage.
You can choose from a combination of one-hour webinars and half day virtual workshops that delve into many of the design issues facing our industry today. From incorporating evidence-based design into long-term care facilities to addressing current challenges faced with behavioral health, pediatric, telemedicine and healthy aging design. I'm especially looking forward to the expert panel discussions and the interactive components that will allow all of us to connect and explore together.
I hope you will join us for many of these upcoming events, be a part of the conversation and find your inspiration here.
Be well,
Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

Design Resources to Help Minimize Infections in the Built Environment
The Center for Health Design has gathered resources from our own website, as well as from partner organizations, to help healthcare facilities address near-term needs related to the current COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to better inform plans and projects in development now and in the future.
While these resources were created to help minimize the impact of infections and transmittable diseases in healthcare facilities, much of the research and guidance is relevant and useful in any built environment.
These resources include:
- The latest COVID-19-specific research and facility response guidance;
- Our MakingRoom online database connecting hotels with hospitals in urgent need of additional space;
- Our Infection Control Toolbox with evidence-based strategies, tools and best practices;
- A link to the FEMA Claims Recovery Service and,
- Select relevant research and articles from our Knowledge Repository.

Webinar: Automating Safety: How Design Research Can Reveal Solutions for Safe Environments
By combining observation, interviews, simulation, and rapid prototyping, this team developed design solutions that help healthcare workers stay safe while engaged in challenging tasks. This webinar brings the experience of the healthcare practitioners who cared for Ebola patients during the 2014 outbreak and introduces a human-centered discovery approach developed by design researchers at SimTigrate Design Lab to define the design requirements of spaces where the risk of self- and cross-contamination is the highest.

COVID Presents Unique Challenges to NICUs
|
Giving birth can be difficult in even the best of circumstances. But what happens if the infant needs to be taken to the neonatal intensive care unit? And what happens if a mother or father tests positive for COVID-19? What if there are not enough isolation rooms? These are just some of the issues that have been confronted by NICUs across the country in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How is COVID-19 Impacting Healthcare Design?
|
Limiting entries, enhancing HVAC systems, compartmentalizing spaces, and creating hot zones are some of the recommendations made by local architecture firm HKS to prepare healthcare facilities for current and future pandemics. HKS released a report with details for short and long-term strategies that will help healthcare systems prepare for a potential second wave of COVID-19.

Accoustic Concerns Making More Noise in Healthcare Facilities
|
The role of a hospital is rather simple to explain. Assist the patients in the healing process so they may return home and to their lives. Anything that assists in that mission is welcomed and anything that hinders should be eliminated. Study after study shows that excessive noise at hospitals hinders patients and negatively impacts the healing process.
There are a number of trends that are arising in the noise reduction industry which are helping hospitals help their patients.
