SEPTEMBER 2019

Almost Autumn

How quickly time flies! The kids are already back in school and summer vacations are now just memories. For The Center, it means we are heading into our very busy season. And we're kicking it off this month with 3 workshops in 3 days in one location. Each workshop addresses designing for a different vulnerable patient population, from sick and injured children, adults and teens suffering from behavioral and mental health conditions and substance abuse, to seniors, especially those with dementia, Alzheimer's and other memory care conditions. We've enlisted the industry's leading experts to provide strategies, solutions and resources to help you create the most effective environments for these populations. Multi-workshop discounts are available, click here to learn more.

Many of you are also in the midst of getting registered for HCD Expo & Conference, happening Nov. 2-5 in New Orleans. I wanted to let you know there are several programs that feature The Center's expert staff, including a pre-conference workshop on Saturday, November 2 titled, "W01 Coaching Workshop: a Practical Application of Evidence-Based Design.  You can get more information on this and other Center sessions here.

Be well,

Debra Levin, Hon. FASID, EDAC
President and CEO

Healthcare at Home: A White Paper

The concepts and solutions included in this paper may be most useful to owners, designers, and healthcare institutions on an as-needed basis in relation to remodeling, retrofitting, and adding to existing homes to support healthcare services.

Technology Brings the Comforts of Home to Pediatric Patients

As the Children's Hospital at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Colorado has recently discovered, being a technologically advanced facility doesn't mean you have to take a high-tech approach to your design elements.

NICU Renovations: A New Beginning

A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is more than a clinical unit in a hospital; it's a first "home" to newborns and a home away from home for parents. To that end, specific care requirements related to the fragility of these patients and needs of their families, present design challenges on any project.

Nine Ways the Dimensions of Wellness Should be Incorporated into Assisted Living Facility Design

The "Dimensions of Wellness" can range anywhere from 4 to 12 dimensions depending on who you ask and have been defined by organizations such as the National Wellness Institute, The Institute for Wellness Education, and universities around the country. One thing that all agree on, though, is that wellness is more than just absence of disease. We also know that seniors prefer to age in place, and that becomes harder to age in place with multiple hospitalizations.

New Book by Robert Levine and Georgeann Burns Empowers Facility Owners

New media, trade journals and white papers are filled with dire stories of capital projects that did not meet schedule, budget and/or scope targets. In short, those projects failed. At the same time, productivity in the construction industry has decreased over the last 50 years - not improved - despite major technology advances. Levine and Burns have a prescription to cure these ills; use proven Evidence-Based Construction tools and methods for capital project development - and become the astute owner that can drive a successful project.

Workplace Culture Key to Return on Investment

Well before I read my first management book or earned a graduate degree in organizational leadership, it was clear to me that people want to be a part of something that brings them a sense of fulfillment. It's not rocket science. At the 10,000 foot level, most organizations are the sum of their people, and the environment created for those people will either support and encourage them to reach their fullest potential or reduce them down to a smaller version of themselves. A healthy culture is jet fuel for an organization with a strong mission and dedicated employees.
