The Scoop

A Blended Approach

Here at The Center, we create many opportunities to communicate with our members and the community as a whole, both virtually and in-person.

While the virtual option allows us to communicate information worldwide, quickly and easily, there's nothing quite like meeting and talking with each of you face-to-face. We just held our first Health Design Insights Networking event in Nashville, and we had a great showing from the regional healthcare design and manufacturing communities. Attendees had the chance to meet other like-minded colleagues over wine and hors d'oeuvres and hear Christopher Pietrzykowski from United Technologies Corporation present "Using Smart Building Solutions to Reduce Operating Costs and Enhance Occupant Experience"  worth one EDAC/AIA CEU. There are still two more of these regional events this year- the first coming up in Chicago on July 26, followed by New York on September 13. If you're in either area on those dates, I'd like to invite you to join us - you'll get a chance to meet the community and come away filled with new ideas,  insights and connections.

Hard to believe we are at the end of May already!  Just a reminder that applications for the Evidence-Based Design Touchstone Awards are due on June 15, 2018. There is one more information session on June 8 that I encourage you to attend if you have any questions regarding the program and submission criteria. Remember, this round of award recipients will be recognized at this year's Healthcare Design Expo & Conference. Awards are given to projects that show exemplary achievement across touchstones of the EBD process: collaboration, evaluation, and sharing. (You can see the 2017 recipients here.)

As we continue to celebrate our 25th anniversary, our pledge to you is to continue to offer you the needed tools, resources and insights to ensure all healthcare environments are healthy, safe and produce the best possible outcomes for patients, families, and staff. You can be a part of our celebration by donating to The Center for Health Design. Donations help us achieve the research, education, and advocacy goals that unleash design's healing power in the U.S. and abroad and help us to ensure a strong future for decades yet to come. Click here to make a contribution to The Center and make a difference in the future of healthcare.

Be well,

Industry News Briefs

Health Care Design Adapts to Meet Changing Industry

Health care design and development will need to continue to adapt to meet the demands of the ever-changing health care industry. The evolving health care landscape includes changes to amenities and types/locations of hospital services, including clinics in retail facilities, more accessible outpatient facilities, free-standing emergency departments and micro-hospitals. The year ahead will see continued developments in how health care providers expect the architectural industry to design and equip their facilities to meet both patient and market needs.

As patients and families have become more sophisticated consumers, the health care provider systems have taken cues from the hospitality industry to embrace a customer focus. The trend is shifting outpatient services from traditional in-patient hospitals to more consumer-friendly environments. Increasing numbers of same-day services and procedures are being performed outside of hospitals, in community locations, which facilitates operational efficiencies and improves clinical outcomes, as well as enhancing customer convenience and satisfaction.

Using AI to Achieve Real Improvements in Healthcare

Big data continues to have a monumental impact in the healthcare industry. However, the challenge remains to identify how this information can be analyzed and used to improve patient outcomes, boost efficiency and cut costs.

The influence of emerging technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), are seen daily. Just think about the online shopping experience for instance. When purchasing one item, suggested items or add-on items appear almost automatically. These recommendations are provided based on an analysis of user data as well as factors that influence purchasing behavior, such as demographics, age, gender, and location.

Soon, this principle will be applicable to healthcare as well. Data in the healthcare industry can come from wearables, which carry immense promise for the future of the care. While the Fitbit is used mostly by individuals to keep track of their own health information, like heart rate and number of daily steps, the connection to the industry will come when that data can be shared with healthcare providers. Healthcare Facilities Today,  more. . .

Making Bold Moves In Healthcare Aesthetics

The aesthetics of healthcare facilities have evolved significantly in recent years, as owners look to design as yet another way to differentiate themselves in the competitive landscape. More subdued, neutral approaches of the past are now being complemented with bolder, design-forward concepts finding a home in brand standards.

“Health systems are considering ways to strengthen brand identity across multiple locations and how to attract patients,” says Carolyn BaRoss, principal and firm-wide healthcare interior design director for Perkins+Will (New York). “A philosophy and approach for how patients and visitors experience the institution, along with interior standards, not only help institutions manage facilities across their real estate portfolios, but can also create a consistent and recognizable identity.” Healthcare Design, more . . .

Innovative Workshop to Provide
New Design Strategies that
Maximize Safety Outcomes

There's Still Time to Register for the
Designing for Patient and Staff Safety Workshop - A Systems Approach Workshop

Date:  June 25-26, 2018

Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile
633 N. St. Clair Street
Chicago, IL 60611

Are you using the latest and best research, strategies and tools? Are you considering the impact that organizational factors, processes and people have on your designs’ effectiveness?

Identifying design strategies, selections and materials that can improve patient and staff safety is an important first step. But if you’re making these decisions in a silo – without considering how an organization’s operations and people might impact their effectiveness – you’re likely missing opportunities to maximize safety outcomes.

This one-of-a-kind workshop features an expert faculty uniquely qualified to “bring it all together” – safety, design and organizational factors. First, you’ll hear innovative solutions for addressing today’s greatest safety challenges:

  • Patient handling
  • Behavioral health
  • Patient falls
  • Medication errors
  • Workplace violence
  • Infection prevention

Where other safety seminars end, we’re just getting started.

You'll find more information including the agenda, faculty and session descriptions here.

FREE TOOLS & RESOURCES

In honor of Older Americans Month, click here to access all Impact of Aging resources

As people live longer, managing the needs of the aging population is more important than ever. The rapid growth in the number of patients over the age of 65, coupled with mass retirement of boomer-age providers, is putting pressure on an already-stressed healthcare system.

Healthcare leaders must address the complex needs and desires of aging individuals while maintaining the bottom line.  And while strategies to support aging should focus on minimizing the strain of disability and illness, there is a large diversity among older generations and the strengths and assets of older individuals must be nurtured as well.

Thanks to our partner J&J Flooring Group, we are able to offer over 30 Impact of Aging resources FREE, that include executive summaries,  webinars, interviews, project briefs and more.

Access them all here.

We invite you
