 How to Be a VIP
It's hard to believe that Healthcare Design Expo & Conference is only three weeks away! I look forward to every aspect of this conference from the pre-conference sessions and tours to the social events and keynote presentations. The Center will have two conference booths this year - one on the main conference level and one in the Expo Hall. One of the conference highlights for me is The Center's VIP reception. This is a chance for The Center to show appreciation for all our members who represent the very best about our industry. It is this prestigious community who is fostering the EBD movement and advancing our work through their support and we always look forward to seeing everyone and celebrating the year during this reception. This year's VIP reception will be on the evening of November 11, 2017 and will be extra special as we will be recognizing the inaugural Evidence-Based Design Touchstone Awards winners. This award recognizes the use of an evidence-based design process in the pursuit of increasing value, improving outcomes, and engaging stakeholders. Awards will be given to projects submitted in September that show exemplary achievement across the touchstones of the EBD process: collaboration, evaluation, and sharing. I am looking forward to recognizing each of these award winners.
Our members meet not only at this annual event, but also throughout the year as our guests at regional networking receptions, that include one-hour CEU sessions. They also have access to more in-depth online information and resources, participate in higher-level learning opportunities, obtain greater visibility in the industry to meet their professional and business objectives and also enjoy discounts on most CHD products and educational tools. Designing Health Care's New Front Door
Once concentrated in a central hub, health care services are moving outward — into retail spaces, clinics, wellness centers, homes, schools and corporate spaces.
People are more likely to seek health care services if it is convenient, whether they live in rural, suburban or urban locations. By identifying underserved market segments, health care organizations are able to establish a front door to the system and direct patients to additional services as needed.
Through this outmigration of care focused on convenience, providers are offering the promise of better service and better health for an increasingly diverse population.

Healthcare Facility Consults Staff on Design Questions
Woman's Hospital in Louisiana has endured much in recent years, from hurricanes and floods to state budget cuts and the construction of a $327 million facility that left some employees worried about its financial future.
But it has managed to thrive through uncertainty in large part by communicating with employees every step of the way.
When the Baton Rouge hospital broke ground on its new facility in 2008, some employees thought the move was financially risky and questioned the need for a new building, so hospital leaders tried to get them excited about the project by making them part of the process.
They consulted with staff on the design before the architectural plans were drawn, from the size and configuration of patient rooms to the bricks on the façade to the waiting room furniture.

Emerging Global Trends
While funding, utilization rates and strategies for growth vary across the heath industry, a growing cohort of healthcare clients in the Middle East, Asia and India are benchmarking with leading healthcare institutions in North America, Western Europe and Australia. Clients with facilities in these areas historically had a narrow focus to address “the big three” of shortages: beds, skilled clinical staff and medical technologies.
Today the confluence of a progressively competitive marketplace and globalization is resulting in an increasing number of discerning patients and providers seeking value from health systems in these international geographies. The industry is experiencing a shift as global clients with facilities in these nations are instructing healthcare designers to place equal emphasis on patient experience, clinical care, quality, safety and revenue capture. The shift is influenced by several drivers.

Patient Experience as Top Priority
In the medical field, one of the only constants that can be counted on is … change. Between medical advancements, progressive technology, legislative updates and population shifts, adaptation is key for those who work in or support the medical field. Two of the fastest-growing specialty markets in healthcare — orthopedics and skilled rehabilitation — have significantly altered their standards of practice in response to these growing demands. Following the healthcare law, there has been a noticeable increase in patients flowing from orthopedic centers into skilled rehabilitation facilities. Updated services come with this shift to better accommodate the ways in which these specialty medical centers care for patients.
With a focus on wellness and affordability, one of the mandates resulting from the healthcare law’s reimbursement structure is for patients to undergo physical therapy prior to surgery as a first step to helping resolve health concerns. Coinciding with the legislative mandates, orthopedic centers are also seeing an increased demand as baby boomers continue to age and medical technology advances.
