Healthy Soundscapes:
Bridging the Gaps between Engineering, Architecture and Medicine
Thursday, September 11, 2014
11:00 am Pacific / 2:00 pm Eastern
Healthy soundscapes are paramount to the missions of hospitals: patients need to sleep and heal without unnecessary environmental stressors; staff, patients, and family need to communicate accurately but privately and staff need to be able to localize alarms and calls for help. The topic of healthcare acoustics has gained increasing attention over the last decade and there is growing evidence of the potentially negative effects of poor soundscapes on hospital occupants.
Join Erica Ryherd, PhD, LEED AP, Assistant Professor, Architectural Engineering Program, University of Nebraska – Lincoln as she:
-
Describes the nature and complexity of hospital acoustic environments
-
Provides various methods of measuring and quantifying hospital acoustic environments
-
Illustrates how occupants are impacted by hospital acoustic environments
-
Explores design and administrative strategies for improving hospital soundscapes
