A New Framework for Design and Planning of Behavioral Health Pediatric Settings

Course Description

This presentation will highlight nine critical needs identified for optimizing room and unit designs, aiming for superior quality outcomes. These CtQs primarily address room design, with some considerations for unit design, within the context of integrating decentralized behavioral health rooms (aka safe rooms, comorbid rooms, inclusive rooms) into units with a med-surg acuity-level. Learn how architects and designers can leverage this comprehensive resource to create safe, inclusive, and therapeutic spaces for pediatric patients.

Learning objectives

  • To understand the nine critical needs that have been identified and to provide suggestions on how to address these in design for quality outcomes.
  • To provide a resource on how patient room design and unit planning can support meeting these simultaneous needs for those working on the design and planning of pediatric patient rooms and units.
  • To provide a reference for best practices and evidence-based design interventions.
  • To be a conversation starter with owners/users to discuss project goals.
