Course Description

A growing body of research suggests that healthcare environments can positively influence the healing process, putting more emphasis on the importance of the work that designers and architects do every day. This course explores trends in healthcare design and looks at newly published research to offer evidencebased strategies for creating quiet, authentic and nature‐inspired spaces that promote rest and healing.

Learning objectives:

  1. Discuss the difference between stress‐inducing noise and restful sound, and review research‐based noise-control strategies.
  2. Examine the role of imagery in healing environments.
  3. Identify critical biophilic design elements and examine the ways designers can employ naturel‐inspired strategies to improve patient experience.
  4. Assess targeted product and material options to aid in the design process.
