How does healthcare facility programming change when new telemedicine technologies move the conversation from the need for flexible facilities to what facilities may become unnecessary? The most influential disruptive technologies have been virtual, redefining the roles of health professionals and forcing the design community to reconsider what kinds of facilities are needed for care delivery. These virtual care technologies are having significant influence on healthcare design because they demand very different kinds of facilities, and in some cases no facilities at all. This presentation will feature these disruptive telemedicine technologies and explore their potential to launch a virtual medical care delivery model that challenges the heart of our healthcare system—the patient-doctor relationship.
