EDAC Continuing Education Requirements

Your EDAC accreditation demonstrates that you have achieved a nationally approved
level of knowledge about an evidence-based process, which should be used in the design
and development of healthcare settings. Continuing education is an integral aspect of
EDAC’s mission to help you maintain excellence and mastery of an evidence-based
design process.

As such, this accreditation requires you to undergo annual continuing education to ensure that you sustain the level of expertise*  that the program holds as the base knowledge of evidence-based design.

To maintain your status as an EDAC accredited individual you must participate in six
hours of approved continuing education sessions every two years. These six hours must
be verifiable and are defined as follows:

1 three-hour class / webinar per year
3 one-hour classes / webinars per year
1 two-hour and 1 one-hour class / webinar per year

* The knowledge base and definition of what connotes expertise will change and develop over time as the industry moves forward.

Description
In the past several years, there has been an explosion of activity within the healthcare community surrounding evidence-based design, which is defined by the Center for Health Design as the “process of basing decisions about the built environment t on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes (CHD 2008)”.

A growing body of research evidence demonstrates that environmental conditions, such as lighting quality, acoustics, and privacy affect the well-being of patients, family members and staff (Ulrich et al. 2009). Perhaps nowhere in the healthcare environment is this more important than in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where fragile infants fight for survival.

In response to the increasingly apparent need for developmentally appropriate environments, a growing number of hospitals are constructing single family rooms in the NICU. These environments are purported to reduce infections, increase privacy, and support parent bonding, kangaroo care, and breast-feeding. During this session, the presenter(s) will share information regarding the field of evidence-based design in general, with a specific focus on research involving NICU environments. Specific examples will be provided.

An Evidence-Based Approach to Healthcare Art
Presenter: Upali Nanda, Director of Research at American Art Resources
Contact: Upali Nanda
Where: At your office, or American Art Resources office
When: various

EDAC Course ID: AA10-001-HA

In this presentation we will provide an overview of the evidence on the impact of art on health and operational outcomes for hospitals. We will share how the research informs practice, and the challenges and opportunities of an evidence-based approach. The case-study of an evidence-based art program with its post-occupancy evaluation will be shared.

We will explore the uncharted territories where more information is needed. We will then discuss research studies conducted in-house, with an insight into research design, human compliance issues, and overcoming logistical challenges to conduct research in a private firm. Finally, we will discuss the critical need of a collaborative model to practice evidence-based design and conduct meaningful research.

Evidence-Based Practice: Application and Evaluation of an Evidence-Based Art Program

Evidence based design is based on the application of best evidence towards design decisions and then an evaluation of whether the decisions made fulfilled the goals and objectives of the design. For the Mays Clinic in M.D.Anderson a completely evidence-based approach was used to develop a comprehensive art program.

Criteria and guidelines for art selection were created based on the existing literature. The artwork was then installed in accordance with these guidelines. 5 years after installation a post occupancy evaluation was conducted with 210 patients and 240 staff members. In this presentation the process of implementing and subsequently evaluating evidence based design for healthcare art programs will be discussed alongwith findings of the P.O.E.

NEW EDAC CEU: Patient-Centric Approaches to Facility Design and Planning

Available for 1 EDAC CEU Credit.
When: February 10, 2010
Time: 1:00 pm EST
Duration: 1 hr

Cost: FREE

Presenter: Philips Healthcare and Sg2 with Harvard School of Public Health
EDAC ID: B10-001-Web (use this on your submission form)

Description:
In an era of unprecedented focus on cost, cost-containment and cost-benefit decisions, how can healthcare providers prioritize opportunities to address needs and the emotional impact of the people (patients, families, and care providers) while managing cost pressures in construction design and planning? Does cost-containment automatically translate into sacrificing elements that will make the space supportive to the people who are in it? Can better human experiences actually improve the quality and efficiency of clinical care? Healthcare experts from Philips Healthcare and Sg2 will discuss methods for identifying and prioritizing people’s needs as part of a new space planning construction and will offer guidelines for evaluating some of the financial and clinical benefits. Senior executives from Florida Hospital will discuss the impact of incorporating the people-focused approach of Experience Mapping and Design into their recent projects and shared what were the resulting benefits, challenges, opportunities and lessons learned. Speakers will also address the trade-offs of expanding the planning team to include designers and equipment suppliers early in the planning process.

Sustainable Design of Healthcare Facilities

Forum: Online
Host: Boston Architectural College
Professor: Mara Baum
Duration: 3/30-5/14/2010 (8 wks)

EDAC ID: E10-001-BAC
EDAC Credit Hours: 6

Description:
Greening healthcare projects should be a no brainer -- what building type has occupants more deserving of a healthy space? Unfortunately, When people think of healthy spaces, hospitals are often among the last to come to mind. The intense resource requirements, code constraints, and programmatic requirements and institutional culture can make green building a more significant challenge than with other typologies.

This course explores theories and practices of sustainable healthcare design, what it means to create a healthy and healing environment, and how to balance the complex demands of hospitals with those of environmental issues. Topics will include energy and water use intensity, toxicities in building materials, daylighting and opportunities for connections to nature, greening a healthcare campus, use of rating systems, and more.

About 40% of the class directly addresses evidence based design topics; the remainder addresses topics specific to sustainability that don't overlap with evidence-based design.  The class is broken down into the following weekly units:

  • Week 1 - Introduction to sustainability in healthcare and its relationship to evidence-based design
  • Week 2 - Creating great indoor environmental quality that contributes positively to healthcare spaces
  • Week 3 - Supporting good indoor air quality and selection of appropriate healthy and green building materials
  • Week 4 - Reducing healthcare facilities' massive impact on global warming and related public health concerns
  • Week 5 - Improve facilities' water efficiency while maintaining healthcare-specific code, clinical, maintenance and durability requirements
  • Week 6 - Design building sites and healthcare campuses to support human and environmental health
  • Week 7 - Implementation of green building rating systems in healthcare design projects
  • Week 8 - Understanding the specific conflicts and synergies between sustainability and evidence based design best practices
