The Scoop

Debra Levin

Engaging with Our Community

Here at The Center, we create many opportunities to communicate and interact with our members and the community as a whole, both virtually and in-person.

While the virtual options allow us to communicate information worldwide, quickly and easily, there's nothing quite like meeting and talking with each of you face-to-face. We recently held a Health Design Insights Networking event in San Francisco, where we had a great showing from the regional healthcare design and manufacturing communities. Attendees had the chance to meet other like-minded colleagues over wine and hors d'oeuvres and hear Tammy Felker, AIA, ACHA, RN, LEED AP® BDC, Architect, ZGF Architects present "Humanizing Behavioral Health Spaces Through Design" . There are still three more of these regional events this year- the first coming up in Toronto on May 22, Chicago on July 25, and New York on September 26. If you're nearby on those dates, I'd like to invite you to join us - you'll get a chance to meet the community and come away filled with new ideas, insights and connections.

Have you recently completed a project that used the EBD process in the pursuit of increasing value, improving outcomes, and engaging stakeholders? I encourage you to submit an application for an Evidence-Based Design Touchstone Award. Applications for this round of awards are due on May 20. Bring your questions about the award or submission criteria to this interactive, online information session. Remember, this round of award recipients will be recognized at this year's Healthcare Design Expo & Conference in New Orleans. Awards are given to projects that show exemplary achievement across touchstones of the EBD process: collaboration, evaluation, and sharing. (See the 2018 recipients here.)

Be well,

PRODUCT INNOVATION HIGHLIGHT

Tower Industries Ligature-Resistant Stainless-Steel Shower Drain Cover

The ligature-resistant shower drain cover is designed to help lower the risks of suicide, self-harm, and the concealing of contraband, while the flush-mounted design provides a sleek, contemporary look. The patent-pending design limits the number of anchor points to reduce the opportunity of strangulation and to remove a potential hiding spot for contraband.

Understanding Injury in Behavioral and Mental Health Settings

An executive summary that reviews a 2016 survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) found that 18% of adults in the U.S. had a mental illness in the previous year (National Institute for Mental Health, 2017).

Exploring the Concept of Healing Spaces

This EBD Journal Club explores how evidence-based design research has demonstrated the power of environmental design to support improved patient, family, and staff outcomes and to minimize or avoid harm in healthcare settings.

Facility's Technology Designed to Decrease Patient Stress

Knowing that patient anxiety and stress can be contributing factors to a patient’s health, the leaders of NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) Hospital and its design team looked for smart ways to create a seamless and calming experience at its newest ambulatory care center.

The David H. Koch Center is home to a wide range of ambulatory services, including outpatient surgery, interventional radiology, diagnostic imaging, infusion services and the Integrative Health and Wellbeing program. To ensure that navigating the 740,000-square-foot center doesn’t turn into a stress-filled event, the center includes a number of technologies to direct patients and loved ones.

Two Reasons Why Ambulatory Care Facilities Struggle with Infection Control Standards

Three of the 10 toughest standards for accredited ambulatory care organizations and office-based surgery practices were related to infection and prevention control activities, according The Joint Commission's Sylvia Garcia-Houchins, infection control director.

Sixty-three percent of ambulatory care organizations surveyed in the first six months of 2017 weren't compliant in reducing infections associated with medical equipment, devices and supplies. Organizations also had difficulty implementing infection prevention and control activities and complying with current CDC or WHO hand hygiene guidelines.

It’s a Brave New World in Health Care Design Today

Seeking to attract healthy patients as well as the sick, health care providers strive to deliver a continuum of care to a population that is growing in quantity and increasing in age. Patients, empowered with choice and well-versed in comparison shopping, seek value and convenience from their health care providers.

A more patient-centered, family focused perspective has emerged, inspiring new models of care delivery.

The consumer and economic trends have far-reaching impact and influence on the design of health care environments.

Finding Home Sweet Home in Senior Living

When seniors and families are exploring independent living senior communities, amenities and the overall campus are priorities. Yet, in reality, the residential unit design is the piece of the decision-making puzzle that will make them feel most at home and allow them to continue many of the same habits and activities that they’ve become accustomed to in their own homes.

So what makes a senior living apartment a “home sweet home?” AG Architecture ( Wauwatosa, Wis.) has been exploring this question as part of a comprehensive effort to understand what boomers want. This influential demographic of approximately 74 million people is redefining aging, so our firm embarked on an information-gathering mission to learn more about the next generation of senior living, beginning with a focus on unit design. We wanted to understand what’s most important within the design of each living unit and how to organize the space to best support living, dining, resting, entertaining, and personal care.
