IN THE KNOW

Directional Sense: How to Find Your Way Around
by Janet R. Carpman and Myron A. Grant

Just released -an award-winning, lighthearted guide to the ins and outs of wayfinding. It is addressed to “directionally challenged” people who cringe at the mere thought of navigating twisting hospital corridors or deciphering cryptic You-Are-Here maps. Carpman and Grant, longtime wayfinding consultants (www.wayfinding.com) explain that finding your way around is a learnable skill, not a mysterious instinct you’re doomed to live without. Directional Sense provides step-by-step tips for following signs, reading maps, recognizing landmarks, using wayfinding technology, and more. By inference, this book offers health facility planners and designers new perspective on why some patients, visitors, and staff have trouble finding their way around and ideas about how to avoid shortcomings of wayfinding cues. Published by Institute for Human Centered Design  Available on Amazon.com.
